PADI SCUBA Diver (Beginner Course - 12m/40ft)
The PADI SCUBA diver courses is a subset of the PADI Open Water Diver course. This means that you will complete roughly half of the PADI Open Water course. This is a great way to experience SCUBA diving while still achieving a certification.
So what does this certification allow me to do?
- Dive under the direct supervision of a PADI professional to a maximum depth of 12 metres
- Obtain air fills, rent or purchase scuba equipment and participate in dive activities as long as properly supervised.
- Continue dive training by completing the PADI Open Water Diver certification and taking certain specialty diver courses.
During the PADI SCUBA Diver course you will learn all the basics of using SCUBA. This course usually runs over a period of 1 day, during this time you will cover a theory, pool and ocean module which are all run at our facility in Simon’s Town, Cape Town.
You will do a total of 2 dives during this course, thereafter you can join us every single weekend on our fun dives around False Bay & the Cape Peninsula.
- Be 10 years or older
- Be medically fit to SCUBA dive (click here for the PADI medical questionnaire)
This is a one day course. It’s however a very intensive day of training. It runs as follows:
7:30AM to 11AM – Theory: During this time you will watch a PADI DVD while answering some knowledge reviews. Once the DVD has ended you will mark the knowledge reviews with your PADI Instructor.
11AM to 12:30PM – Skill Development: You will for his session go in to our pool and practice and array of safety and buoyancy skills.12:30PM to 6PM – Assessment: You will do 2 dives in the ocean where you will be required to execute the skills that you learned in the swimming pool.
This course has a short section on theory where you will complete 3 chapters of the PADI Open Water Diver manual. These chapters include the following key points:
- Being a diver
- Your skills as a diver
- Problem management
This session is run just before you get in confined water and is mandatory to complete before you get in the water.
The skill development portion of this course deals with 3 confined water sessions. During these you will learn the basics of SCUBA diving. This is done at our swimming pool in Simon’s Town, Cape Town. Your instructor will brief you on land and demonstrate the skills underwater, you will then need to repeat the skill to the point where you show mastery in all the required motor skills.
This section is very important as this will be the last time your instructor helps you achieve the skills, once this section is over you will go to open water where you will be required to do the skill with no demonstration or assistance.
The last portion of the PADI SCUBA Diver certification takes you two dives in and around the Cape Peninsula & False Bay. During these dives you will need to demonstrate your understanding of what it takes to be a diver. You will do this by repeating the skills you learned in confined water without any assistance.
Once you have demonstrated mastery in all the different skills you will receive the PADI SCUBA Diver certification and you can join any of our PADI Professionals on dives around Cape Town!
